There is no other gum like this one. Choward's Scented Gum is violet — actual violet, floral and perfumey and completely unlike every mint on the shelf. It was built to do a job mint can't quite manage: reset your breath after coffee, after lunch, after a cigarette. Eight pieces to a slim purple pack that disappears into a pocket.

It's been made the same way in Bellport, New York since 1934, about five minutes from our door. People either fall hard for it or hand the pack back after one chew. There's not much middle ground, which is sort of the point.
